LCAAA Welcomes the PWHL to Detroit!

The city proudly known as Hockeytown has lived up to its name once again: the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is expanding to Detroit!

On Wednesday, May 6th, current Little Caesars AAA Girls’ players, parents, and coaches were in attendance at Little Caesars Arena for a special press conference hosted by the PWHL and Ilitch Sports & Entertainment. Multiple LCAAA athletes and coaches were also invited to take the stage ahead of the official announcement, making it an unforgettable moment for our program.

With this expansion, Detroit becomes the ninth team in the PWHL, with play set to begin at Little Caesars Arena in the 2026–2027 season.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our longtime Girls’ Division Director, Manon Rheaume, on her appointment as General Manager of the new expansion team. A true trailblazer in the game, Manon made history as the first woman to appear in an NHL game and has remained one of the most influential figures in women’s hockey.

Following her playing career, she has dedicated more than a decade to LCAAA, continuing to serve as a passionate advocate for creating opportunities and growth for young female athletes. We are incredibly proud of Manon and excited to see her leadership shape the future of the PWHL in Detroit.

Looking ahead, Detroit will also host the 2026 PWHL Draft at the Fox Theatre on June 17th. The league currently features several LCAAA alumni, including Riley Brengman, Amanda Thiel, Shiann Darkangelo, Elle Hartje, Clara Van Wieren, and Melissa Channell-Watkins, and we look forward to seeing that list continue to grow.

A historic moment for our program, our city, and the game of hockey. Detroit continues to set the standard!
